ode to another hammie (my hammie is now an orphan)
it's often said that a very close couple tends to follow one another in passing from this world to the next
and indeed, it's happened for our most senior hammies
the man has followed, peacefully curled up underneath his wheel
again, the hammie at my place is blissfully unaware that he's now officially an orphan
all i can do is to give him as good a life as shu has given to her eldest ones =)

Ode to Hammie
I've known her only for about one-and-a-half years,
but somehow that affinity seems to be the strongest
among the merry little gang that lives beneath the clothes hangers.
Guess she's after all the mother of my first real pet ever.
I wonder if Burbur's little hammie instincts are strong enough
to sense that his mummy's gone up to the great carrot-filled heaven up there.
He merely gave an extra twitch or two of his whiskers
when I told him this morning.
I also wonder if clumsy, lumbering Prince knows about it
or feels it somehow in his own daddy hammie senses
Or simply finds it a bit vacant
Now that he doesn't have someone
To fight over his food or let him hump
That horny little big fella.
But what I don't need to wonder
And in fact am pretty sure about
Is that Ah Girl's been given a fantastic life
As fantastic as hammies' can get.
How many would have had this kind of freedom
To roam the house periodically
And even bring her kiddos with her
And still have food waiting for her when she decides to return
I'm glad we found where she usually hides
That little alcove among the onions and potatoes
Has become and will remain
A special and affectionate place for us
A nondescript little hole that no one else bothers about
But will always be a place associated with her.
So a final little ditty for the perky little hammie
So "full of character and wit"
Life of the party? We're not so sure
But brought the party into life, that she's sure
Rest in peace, dearest Ah Girl.
Roam the orange hammie heavens,
And make sure your pouches are always full.

10 minutes before class...
One of the most common teacher conundrums -- what to do when you have about 10 minutes left before your next class? After a few days of hard work and all that, I thought I'd just give all that marking a rest and... blog! Heh.Nothing much has been happening besides work and life -- then again, what else is there? On the work front, things are going fine, or dare I say, going well. Been really busy, but if that's a sign of what I'm entrusted with, I guess that's a good sign. Commitments at work are mounting up, but I'm fortunate to be in an environment in which we are recognised for the things we do. Add to that, a fantastic bunch of people I work closely with, and I think the work formula's pretty much complete. That said, it is rather scary when I leave school at 5.45pm and I congratulate myself for leaving early. Have been putting in 12-hour days quite a bit this term, and I see how hard we're worked. Over dinner a few weeks ago, Shufeng's brother was talking about his day off, because he'd worked a 12-hour shift the day before. Shufeng and I just dropped our stuff and said something to the effect of how we're putting in 12-hour shifts regularly and no one's giving us off days! One more thing that I'd like to remind anyone who's considering teaching -- don't consider, if you're not prepared to continue work even after you leave your office. There's the multitudes of marking to manhandle too!Again, I don't think I'm complaining. I guess things are good -- it is definitely a rewarding career, and the best times of my day are spent in the classroom. The unpredictability of lessons and the way students react; keeping myself on my toes by constantly thinking and rethinking how certain lessons could have gone better; quick little conversations with colleagues who drop an encouraging word or compliment -- all these are things I'm not sure I can find in any other profession. Tangible rewards? Promotion (albeit a cohort one) in a couple of months that should place me at a comfortable income level, and perhaps more things to come next year. (Will update that when things are firmed up! =D) This level of busy-ness is good, especially when I'm starting out, but I wonder if I can keep up next year with added responsibilities?I guess I'll just approach it with quiet confidence!Five more minutes -- I sure blog fast! =p Don't think many people follow this blog anymore, but I don't mind =p Gonna get some tea first -- the throat's complaining!

year 27
I think it's becoming a habit for me to count my blessings yearly after birthday season =p
A simple feeling of thankfulness for the people who've thought about me. Instead of putting it in chronological order, let's start with the ones which really mean the most to me...
And of course, we start with Shufeng. Thanks darling, for being there, for spending 72 hours and more entirely with me, and being such a wonderful girl all this while. I can't thank you enough =)
Then there's family -- Much thanks to Dad and Mum for booking the dinner at Shangri-La. Expensive, but the experience was good. Thanks to Aunt too, though her well-meant Haagen-Daaz ice cream cake got melted before we could bring it home. And to Laura too for her cute pair of phone chains... And of course Shu for being her usual reassuring self =)
Then the band gang for turning up at my place on National Day, and making it for the birthday cake thing -- Yihua, Jiamin, Zhiwei, Kris, Shiyun + Bf, Jingyi, Shuwen, Kelvin, Huijun, Emmeline for turning up, and Jianwei and Shiqi for really wanting to come along though it was really late already. And of course Shu for being her usual reassuring self =p
And a recent addition to my burgeoning social circle -- Colleagues at school, who surprised me with a well-acted out staff lounge cake thing. Senior Teacher Clarence came to me in a serious tone and said he needed to speak to me about NE stuff, and we proceeded to the lounge, where the dept broke into song. Totally taken in, hook, line and sinker. Talk about teachers being drama heh. Felt really touched and warmed by the quick acceptance I've been lucky to receive in the past year.
Then the more social gang at work -- Sophia, Shihua, Alvin, Sam, Jasmine, Ravin, Brett, Sarina. Got a nice treat at Changi T2 Swensen's. Great to have been readily accepted into this gang of fun irreverent people at work =)
And of course, with technology booming, and the rise of social networking sites, first there's sms, and then facebook. Let's list down some names so I don't forget (or I try not to forget) to thank these people and wish them happy birthday in return too! =D
via phone calls: Zonghe + Peixin (we're still waiting!), Shu's Mummy!
via SMS: Zhiwei, Shiqi, Daddy, Jianwei, Shawn, Jolie, Laura, Jiamin, Mummy, Xuanxuan, Yaoliang, Chris, Jianye, Mr Lee, Sathya, Shuwen, MAJ Lai, Shufeng (hehe), Gladys, Khairul, Fahmy, Yean Hwee, Jerrybuddy, Shiyun, Zhangjun, Huijun, Yijun, Yubing, Yihua, Junye, Xiuling, Cousin Zhen, Yana, Mark, Vivian, Eric, Yidali.
via Facebook: Cynthia, Amin, Eunice, Yihui, Shoo Mei, Eerong, William, Alvin, Jasmine, Leonard, Desmond, Syai, Kiang, Laxe, Marc, Jasmine, Cheung Kit, Vanessa, Mark, Audrina, Nat, Xin-wei, Alfiza, Winston, Qian Ping, Don, MAJ Simon, Oliver, Sharmaine, Genevieve, LTC Kevin, Tiffany, Karen, Benedict, Dawn, Edward, Tiffany, Zhifong, Elizabeth, Hui'En, Lewis, Gigi, Danny, Yubing, Jiin Joo, Aloysius, Jennifer.
Type finish liao, I think I'm insane. I could've marked a couple of essays in the meantime =p That said, still, I feel really loved at the end of this, and I think I'm really fortunate. Thanks all!
